As someone who works very closely with teachers throughout Virginia, teachers are not prepared to adequately support students with complex behavioral health needs. This includes but is not limited to students on the autism spectrum with co-occurring mental health conditions. School staff, including teachers and paraprofessionals, are overworked as is and they are not trained nor adequately equipped to support students with significant mental health needs, especially neurodivergent individuals. TDT is an essential service that fills this gap. Without TDT, many of these students risk falling through the cracks and being unjustly removed from the school when what they really need is support within the school environment. These are kids who likely will not be receiving mental health support if it is not provided within the school. Removing TDT will have detrimental effects for youth who do not, and will not, receive services otherwise.
